Spring Season 2008 Impressions
April 20, 2008

Spring. A time for cherry blossoms, first loves, and freshly baked anee-may. What more could anyone want? Note that this is not a comprehensive list by any means.

1. NOT QUITE INFATUATION-LEVEL SHOWS

Special A|| Code Geass R2 || Vampire Knight

All of these shows are quite entertaining and have quite the hype around them, and while they seem to be pretty decent, i’m not as obsessed as others seem to be. Really, I’m just watching so as to keep afloat in watercooler forum discussions, and the like.

2. SHOWS I’M QUITE INFATUATED WITH:

Kure-nai

Has 16 year old Kurenai Shinkurou met his match when he’s hired to protect 7 year old Kuhouin Murasaki?

This show gives off some serious Speed Grapher vibes. (Or some Seirei no Moribito, depending on how you look at it.) Meaning, the whole "older guy helps younger girl get her "freedom" then protects her from the baddies using his ghastly, inhuman powers" plot. Fun, yes, but pedophilia just doesn’t fly with me like it used to. [Don’t ask.]

Luckily, the relationship between the two leads seems innocent and fun; fun for a show that hides a darker nature underneath, that is.

Soul Eater

Two words: ANIMATION BUDGETTT! The first two episodes of this show are amazing, imho. The animation is smooth, slick, and detailed; the fighting scenes left me wanting more. Yet, I’m afraid. I’m afraid of the horrors of anime based on fanservicy, typical, run of the mill shounen manga.  Please BONES, set my faith anew. Don’t let the quality drop past episode 3.

Library War

One of the more original shows (albeit a tad lame in terms of the overarching warring library plot) , Library War tells the story of a not-so-distant Japan in which the government has passed a Media Improvement Law as a form of blatant censorship, where only libraries represent a kind of safe haven for books that would normally be cracked down on. Or at least, they did. Kasahara Iku joins the Library Force in order to "protect books," and to find the man who saved her from some Media Improvement baddies when she was in high school.  I can’t help getting a Planetes vibe from this show for some reason; if they can keep the romance/light vibe going without overdoing the whole "Media Governement mumbo-jumbo diatribe thing" I think this show can go a long way.

 # of times the word "vibe" was used: 3.
